Sorry I can't help directly but, from what I know of my family background ís that my great grand father, came to Liverpool with his brother, I'm guesing this was around the late 1800s. Though I cant be too sure. My Aunt was tracing the family history some years back. But due to my service in the forces, and a slight in family dispute, I havent heard from her in a good few years.
I do know that my GGfather was a Cobbler in Steble St. in the Dingle. And our side of the family all lived around the Docks/Mill St. area there(some still do).The other side, that being his brother were all located around in/around Speke. I know the surname is/was rare in Liverpool, so there could be a connection there. Unfortunately I am now living in Germany!

Thomas Abernethy who came from the Orkney islands with his brother to Liverpool they were both fishermen he had 4 brothers and 1 sister he married a Jane Howie who also came from Stevenson Ayre Scotland they had 4 children
he was born 1819 he ended up being the Lighthouse Keeper of Crosby and Formby he alternqated between the two.
I have a relative up north england who says there was and still is a branch of the Abernethys linked to us residing near Seaforth Docks Liverpool, Anyway if this is of interest to you I will give you my e-mail address because I feel somewhere there is a link and when I have established it I can forward to you what I know.
