My great grand father was James Dickson Beckett, James died in Sydney after returning from America via Europe in 1887. He is buried in Kew Cemetery, Melbourne. James married Emma Whitelaw in Ballarat. Emma was the daughter of Thomas and Emma Whitelaw (formerly of Scotland). The Whitelaws and Becketts moved to Hawthorn, Melbourne. James and Emma had one child a daughter Gwladys. Gwladys was one year old when James Died. Gwladys Beckett visited her relations in Lancashire, Darwen and Manchester in the early 1900's. James Beckett and daughter Gwladys- relations are: Mr. C.J. Beckett (J.P.) born at Spring Gardens, Darwen 1851. His father was Eli Beckett and his mothers family were Thurston Briggs Fish, his brothers Mr. J.J. Beckett and Mr.W.E. Beckett.
Mr C.J. Beckett was an auditor of several local companies, including the Darwen Paper Company, Ltd. After leaving Darwen he lived at 'Sunnyhurst' 33 All Saints Road, St. Annes-on-the-Sea, in 1907. He married Betsy, daughter of Benjamin Kirkham, from Pickup Bank, and was at one time in business with his brothers as cotton manufactures. His son Harold E. Beckett was a member of the staff of the Manchester and county Bank. His eldest daughter Ethel married Jack Grime, of Sunnyhurst Paper Mill (their address in 1943 was 14 Sunnyhurst Lane Darwen)and his youngest daughter married Mr. W.F. Perry, of Northwich. Other relations David and Phyllis, the Claringbulls,the Waterworths and the Kershaws.
