Hello Gaby!
- not sure whether you will be able to help or not: my Great grandmother was Marie Bickel, born in France around 1873.She came to England as a lady's maid/companion/governess and was married from 37 Clarges St London in 1894 (district of Hanover Square)
The Haviland family had a Childrens servant, Mary Bickel, aged 17 (1891 census record) I wonder whether she moved from Lilley to London (to a relative maybe) prior to her marriage. She married a Valet of 42 Clarges St. I have a photo of her taken at age approx 23 with her first child. It could help if there is any photographic material of the Haviland children and Nanny?
We are also under the impression that she travelled extensively with the lady of the household...Egypt, maybe?
Maybe these tit bits of information will ring some bells with you.
I did go to the village of Lilley last year.. its not far from where I live in Biggleswade... it would have been a good 'living' for the Rev and his family.
Best wishes
Prudence
