From The History of Boone Co., Iowa 1880
James Moss,farmer of 440 acres, was born 9/08/1822 in Clay Co., MD. where he lived until 1849 when moving to Boone Co., Iowa. That same year he was kicked by a horse, rendereing him helpless for over a year. The support of the family fell on the shoulders of his wife; she planted the corn, fenced it with her own hands, besides taking care of two little children and her ill husband. He did partly recover and was able to care for the farm. He died by 1880. He married Martha Luther, in Maryland, in 1845. Children: Clark L., Charles H., Samuel, Alvin, Edwin, Clarinda and Arminda.
