During the period between 1835 and 1846, regiments of the
U.S. Army made several journeys, in both directions, on the
new Erie Canal across New York State. During their many
stops between Albany and Buffalo, Recruitment Adjutants
conscientiously and successfully enlisted hundreds of men
in need of money and shelter. These men, some of which were from Ontario, were previously
laborers during the construction on the Erie Canal, farmers,
blacksmiths, coopers and ex-soldiers from all over New York
