Hi,
My grandfather came through Ellis Island around 1912-1913, and worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube for a few years. He never clearly explained how his name changed from DiPofi to Poff. I have not been able definely find him through the Ellis Island immigration records.
He then moved to Midland PA where he worked for Crucible Steel until he retired. He died 27 Jul 1978. His wife was Mary Candido Poff. Their 1914 marriage certificate shows my grandfather's name as Poffe.
I reverted back to my ancetral name "DiPofi" about 10 years ago. I live in Richmond Virginia now. I have two cousins, living in Charlotte NC, and one uncle, living in Hiltonhead, SC, that still retain the name Poff.
There is an old story about an Uncle Tony DiPofi, from Albany NY, visiting my family regularly in Midland, PA during the 1920-1930s.
I have been trying to make a connection with any of the DiPofi's in the U.S. but have had no success so far.
