Hi, as I said my father( born in Cassino on 19th June 1911) as well as my grandfather( born in San Biagio Saracinisco in the year 1857) had as family name Jaconelli. I was born on 7th May 1939 in Rome,i.e during the dictatorship of Mussolini (1923-1943)and until 1960 I wrote my family name as my father, i.e.Jaconelli. In 1960 I joined the Italian Air Force and in the official decree by which I got my nomination to Liutenant the family name all of a suddenly became Iaconelli. As you are perhaps aware the Italian alphabeth does not include the J,Y.X.W,K.Altthough in Old Italian you normally find "J" when it is followed by the vocal "a" e.g. "Jacopo".
Upon my request for clarification I had been told by the municipality of Rome (anagrafe) that it was perfecly correct the spelling "I"in that "J" was no letter of the Italian alphabeth. There was no possibility to obtain through a tribunal a change because no proof of the original name Jaconelli could be brought. In fact during the II World War. in the year 1944 Cassino was completely destroyed and the official registers lost.
This is all I can tell you about the change of my family name from Jaconelli into Iaconelli..
Regards
