Hullo ALL WOOD Researchers

Is anyone researching the below WOOD line. THOMAS WOOD was my grandfather born 1862 but unable to find him or his family in 1871 census

We know from family history that he left England and came to Australia in 1880's ( see below details state 1884 He became a Policeman and retired as Officer in Charge of Young Police Station NSW Australia in late 1920's.Thomas Wood died 1946/1947 at Young. He was married to a Esther Emma Kranstuyver in 1888. wife died also at Young 1940.

They had a family of 10 children , all born in NSW ( Cooma or Young ) Australia.

Florence born Cooma NSW 17/1/1889

( did not marry )

Harold Thomas Cooma 26/5/1890

Wilfred Edgar Cooma 9/10/1891

( He was killed in World War 1 )

Edith May Cooma 8/10/1893

( known to have married a Mr Sutherland from Young NSW area)

Walter Norman Cooma 12/4/1895

(married, was a Solicitor, Young NSW )

Hilda May Cooma 21/9/1897

(married a Mr R Lawry )

Elizabeth Olive Cooma 6/12/1899

(known to have married a Ernest Adams, Young, Grenfell NSW area)

Albert Henry Young 28/4/1902

(married, lived Sydney NSW )

Stanley Roy Young 6/6/1904

(known to have married a Margaret Catherine Armstrong, lived Young, Cowra, NSW )

Dorothy Young 17/11/1911

(known to have married a Mr Duncan and owned Plantations , Papua New Guinea )

It was believed the details from UK 1881 census were correct for Thomas & parents but unable to find family on 1871 UK Census.

Now seeking details from Young NSW of full names for Thomas Wood , just in case he had other Christian name which will help us locate him in correct parents, birth & census details.

Below is a summary of details supplied by many Wonderful fellow Wood researchers but we keep hitting brickwalls trying to trace Thomas Wood back from australia.

It is hoped now some others may have connection to the WOOD line.

Any replies greatly appreciated

regards Malcolm Wood Sydney Australia.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

SUMMARY of many details supplied to us by some very helpfull people.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I think the 1851 census with the Wood family in Norton and the 1861 with them in Acton are the right family. So, that looks as though Mary was born Worcs and not Gloucester as we thought. So, does that mean the 1838 marriage is not the right marriage because why would they marry in Gloucs. if both from Worcs ? Do you know for sure she was called Ballanger ? I think I need to look at other places around south Worcs to try and find another William Wood marriage.
regards C

( Answer No not sure Ballanger correct, only research was 1881 UK Census and another researcher sent LDS details of a married of Wood/ Ballanger, which linked with 1881 Census)

I don't know where Charles was on the 1851 census as he seems to be on the 1861. Perhaps he was staying with grandparents or something. The other reason could be that the Charles who was on the 1851 died and they had another child whom they called Charles.

The other mystery I have is, you know on the 1851 census check you get. It doesn't seem to cover all the country. Is it supposed to because your William isn't on it and we know he was in Norton and my William Wood sin't on it and I know he was around somewhere.
regards C

( QUESTION Does anyone know if many names are missing from UK 1851 Census)

Some ore of your information mentions a William Woods family in Holy Cross Pershore. This is where my William Wood family lived but it isn't my William you have information on so there must be a third Wood family in the same area. Very confusing !!!!

C

Dear Malcolm

1891 UK Census

I am afraid we have been unable to locate Mary & William, should you have anybody else you would like looking up then please let me know.
Best Wishes
W

G'day Malcolm
Sorry, mate, don't see any of them on the 1871 that I have. Worcestershire is one, but Hereford and Gloucester are not indexed yet.
Perhaps another lister has them. But will let you know if they come available.
Sorry
A fellow Aussie

I did find this to confirm what you were sent:-

I have checked all the Eckington registers again and there were definitely
no little Woods born there after the births of your William and his brothers
and sisters. I did get the deaths of William's parents Richard and Ann but I
can't remember if I gave you these before. Let me know if I haven't.
I also checked some Pershore and Upton Registers for the baptisms of the
Thomas's I found in the GRO but I haven't found them yet. Both districts
cover a lot of parishes so it may take a while.
I think we can take it that the William born Eckington to Richard and Ann is
your William ????
I will try and find the Richard and Ann marriage next

Hi Malcolm - your William and Mary Maria are proving to be very elusive I'm
afraid. However, with the new info you gave me I think I may have found the
John Wood you believe to be their son born in 1843, Norton by Bredon, in the
1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses, which I've listed below:

1871
40 Pheasant Street, St Martins, Claines, Worcester.
John Wood, Head, 28, Railway Porter, b Norton Worcestershire.
Ann, Wife, 31, Housewife, b Collington, Hereford.
Jane, Daur, 1, born Worcester.

1881
Sansome Place, Claines, Worcester.
John Wood, Head, 38, Hop & Seed Porter, b Bredons Norton, Worcester.
Ann, Wife, 41, b Collington, Hereford.
Jane, Daur, 11, Scholar, b St Martins, Worcester.

1891
St Martin Gr(?), Claines
John Wood, Head, 48, Hop & Seed Porter, b Bredon Norton, Worcester.
Ann, Wife, 52, b Collington, Hereford.
Jane, Daur, 21, S, Gloveress, b Worcester.
Mary Wood, Aunt, S, 78, b Worcester.

I wondered if the Mary Wood living with them in 1891 could possibly be your
Mary Maria? Although the relationship (Aunt) and the fact that she is listed
as single do not tie up with that (as if it is Mary Maria, she should be
shown as Mother and possibly married or widowed) but it is still worth
keeping in mind for the moment.

Another reply from 1861 census, hope it helps. Now if some nice person would
reply for 1871 census would show Thomas in it and hopefully still some of the
others with their parents. When you deduct age 44 from 1861 = 1817 is date
of birth for Mary on 1851 census and 1861 - 18 = 1843 which agrees with son
John. Now son William who would be 16 not on 1861 census ( may have left
home to work elsewhere ??) yet a Charles same age as a John appears ?? It
might be a typo error as Charles from LDS site would be approx 12

I written back to ask to check Charles age. So now we appear that 1851
census then 1861 census and LDS site is hopefully ours (PLEASE ) with

William Wood born Eckington 1815
Mary Maria Wood Eckington 1817
John Wood Eckington 1843
William Wood Eckington 1845
Charles Wood 1849
James Wood 1852
Alfred Wood 1855
Walter Wood 1857
Thomas Wood 1862

Yes , the church is called St Giles and therefore Thomas would have been
baptised here. Acton is short for Acton Beauchamp in these parts. Acton was
part of Worcester County Council until about 1895, then changed to
Herefordshire County Council, although the postal address is still
Worcestershire

I was going through the Gloucester 1851 census this afternoon and it seems
that Norton/Bredon is covered by Gloucester census as it is just outside
Worcester. There is another Norton which is Norton juxta Kempsey and that is
in Worcester. Anyway, the one for Gloucester shows this family;y and I think
in view of the information you got about the baptisms at Norton by Bredon
this is your family in 1851

Piece 1974 Folio 269 Schedule 38.
Address Norton.
William Wood H M 36 Farmer's Shepherd. born Eckington c
1815
Mary Maria Wood W 34 "
c 1817
John Wood son 8 scholar "
c 1843
William Wood son 6 " "
c 1845

Eckington is really close to Norton so it would be possible for the boys to
be born there and baptised Norton although I think they moved to Norton
after their births. Shepherds moved from farm to farm in those days to work.
It has Eckington for the birthplace of Mary but that could just be a
mistake. I have those mistakes on the census with my Wood family. Also, the
date of birth for William senior fits with the one I found the baptism, for
at Eckington (it is usual to be out by a couple of years on the census).
Charles should have been on the census as he was baptised 1849 but he isn't.
Perhaps he had died as an infant.
I have checked the same area for 1861 but they aren't there. Either they had
moved to another area completely or they were in another local hamlet. I
will keep looking but from your list the last child baptised at Norton was
Walter in 1857 so my guess is they had moved elsewhere by the 1861 census.
Possibly to Acton where Thomas was baptised. Acton is quite a way from
Norton.
regards C

Hello

I can't help with the 1871 census, but found the following---all sons
of a William and Mary Wood

All Bapt Norton by Bredon Worcs

John 9 Apr 1843

William 21 Dec 1845

Charles 18 April 1849

James April 1852

Alfred 15 April 1855

Walter 27 Sep 1857

So, it looks like there might be another one or two between 1838 and
1843???

William Wood believed to have married Mary Maria Ballanger

Married 20/10/1838 at Tewkesbury, Gloucester, England

CAUTION /////// Another researcher advises that this may not be my Wood
line

Children stated were in 1861 Census

JAMES born approx 1847
ESTHER 1851
WILLIAM 1853
JOHN 1856
GEORGE 1858
JOSEPH 1860
THOMAS 1862

Thomas is my grandfather and came to Australia before 1888

It is believed Esther may have married in 1866 to a Thomas Pearson

Seeking any information on William and Mary Maria Wood

1861 Census had them living at 123 Dennis . Amblecote,

1881 Census at Westmancote rd, Bredon,Worcester
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////
had a quick look at the entry details you sent on the 1861 entry for 123
Dennis, Amblecote and I am not sure this is your family now. The census CD
is a scan of the actual census image and it contains the occupations and
birth places. It has William senior as being born 1823 but the place name of
birth is difficult to read. The county begins with ST and then what looks
like Moor Lane. Amblecote did come under Staffordshire at that point I think
so I read this as William being born Staffordshire or Stourbridge. Amblecote
is part of Stourbridge.
His wife Mary is stated as being born in what I definitely think is
Stourbridge. George looks like the place is Yeats and Esther in Wollaston.
