Hi,
at first excuse my bad english!
Bolter is the maker of bolts which means the short arrows of crossbows. Crossbows were first used in the battle of Hastings in 11th century. All Bolters of the 15th, 16th und 17th came from southern England and are probably the issues of the first bolt makers.
Because Lutherians were chased some of them emigrated to Pommern (now Poland), to Switzerland, France and Western Prussia. My own name "Boelter" comes from Bolter, my familiy comes from Pommern.
Regards
Dr. Detlev Boelter
