adoption/black market?

Has anyone ever heard of in the 1930s , if a baby died early, with a day, that the hospital took care of the arrangements? Thats the story that we have gotten however, we are unable to locate a death certificate or cemetary location. Was this normal practice to do this?
We find it odd that my grandmother was told the baby died a day within birth and we cannot locate any type of records
