Upon researching my family name CRANEY/CRANNEY history I found that we were originally from Scotland, the Isles of Jura and Islay. I have spent many months and dollars trying to find the clan we originated from. I thought we came from the Sept MacCrain of the Clan Donald. The Clan Donald is also from Jura and Islay area. A part of the CRANEY/CRANNEY history scroll shows some of the name variations to be MacCrayne, MacCrain, MacCraney, etc. and they this name was found in Jura and Islay. This is what led me to the Clan Donald. But . . .I recently received information from someone in Scotland that he felt the name CRANEY was a variant of CRANSTOUN. I searched surnames in Scotland and did find a William CRANYSTOUN and an area called CRANYSTOUN but they were no where near Jura or Islay. So, either clan (CRANSTOUN or DONALD/MacCRAIN) could be my original family source. Can anyone shed some light on my dilemma? Any assistance, or even tips on how to find out without spending hundreds of dollars, would be greatly appreciated. I live in New York but my family CRANNEY is from Counties Down and Armagh in Ireland.
Thank you very much
Regina Cranney
